Meet-and-greets were always Marc Silvera’s favorite part of the day. Back in his youth, he loved the thrill of heroism, the adrenaline that came with fighting against dangerous people and bringing them to justice. Now, it was much less about adrenaline as it was before; he got his enjoyment from knowing that he made others’ lives just a little bit safer, helping them sleep more easily. Luckily, Josiah Power’s booths in the Polynesia Resort’s cafeteria boiled that right down to a science.
Dan and Courtney would always get the most fans, considering that they ran their own media platforms at one point; Helga and Curtis would occasionally hang around his booth for the fans. Ray and Thunder each had their own devoted lines, with their fans from Tulsa and Metropolis often making pilgrimages to New Coast to visit them. The ceremonially empty booth to the left of Marc was there for Vibe, who had attracted a lot of people placing down flowers and mementos, paying their respects. It was still hard for Marc to believe that he was really gone.
Marc’s was always the shortest line. He knew why; for a long time, the second Commander Steel was a small-town urban legend whose existence was unconfirmed. The name was also associated with a military group that many disapproved of or outright loathed, Marc himself chief among them after all these years, who was a willing participant in it. Finally, there was the third reason: Commander Steel was not a welcoming figure to most. His helmet kept out any sign that he was even a human, which was no longer a valid assumption for superheroes. In a lot of ways, he understood why children would even be scared of him. He liked to pretend that this didn’t bother him, but he knew deep down that it did, just a little.
Even still, he did have several people who came over to meet him. A tall woman with red hair and excessive amounts of makeup walked up to him, her young son in tow. He couldn’t have been more than seven years old, Marc thought. He sat down on a wooden chair nearby and smiled behind his mask.
“Hello there,” Marc chuckled. “What’s your name, young man?”
“Collin,” he smiled, hiding his face in his hands, his dirty mop of red hair covering his eyes.
Marc laughed heartily, almost as if he were a mall Santa. He felt like the kids needed to know that he wasn’t as scary as he seemed behind the mask, and laughing was the best way of doing that. Collin couldn’t see how wide he was smiling behind the visage, the tear of joy running down one of his eyes. “Now Collin, why don’t you sit on my lap and we can take a picture together?”
“Yeah!” Collin said. “I love you, Commander Steel. I want to be a superhero like you when I grow up.”
“Oh, is that so?” Marc said joyfully, smiling as Collin climbed up into his lap. He hid a grimace; as much as he enjoyed the job, seeing someone so young determined to be someone who put their life on the line was very off-putting to him. The camera flashed, taking a picture of Collin with his hero, and Marc just let the moment rush over him.
“Remember to enjoy your stay at New Coast Polynesia Resort!” he called out behind them as they left the line. He always felt weird saying that, but Josiah told them to, and it wasn’t like he didn’t want them to have a fun vacation.
The next person moved forward in the line, a teenage boy wearing a camo button-down shirt. “Hey, Commander Steel,” he said gleefully. “You’re so awesome. It’s so cool that I get to meet you.”
Marc went through the rounds, but he wasn’t focused on the boy anymore. Instead, Marc stared transfixed as the next woman in line, a middle-aged Black woman with a short bob of shoulder-length grey hair, wearing a black dress with grey and blue accents. His stomach dropped as he finished up with the kid in camo, turning to the woman in front of him.
“Jenna,” he said, coming out as little more than a breath. He stood up from his chair. “Why are you here?”
“Trust me,” she said with her lips pursed. “I didn’t want to come just as much as you probably don’t want to see me. Something came up.”
Marc stared at her, not saying anything.
“Richards’ sentence is up,” Jenna muttered coldly. “I was hoping he’d changed, but he’s on a bus straight to New Coast. I just wanted to warn you and your team, knowing what he’s capable of.”
“Yes, of course,” Marc said as his former wife left the line. He turned to her and called out as she walked away. “Hey, hey, you have a fantastic rest of your life, whatever you’re doing.” She didn’t respond.
Marc turned to the next guest, his mind not fully there. As his experience with Jenna faded from his mind, he realized that something much worse was about to happen, and he had to warn the team about it.

“Okay,” Curtis said, his back against the wall of Room 103. The members of Coastguard were gathered in their costumes, having come back from the meet-and-greet minutes earlier. “A quick recap on the Phosphorus situation for Courtney: We’ve been able to take out some street-level guys who were peddling narcotics, but none of them claimed they had ever seen the man’s face. He apparently keeps very little company; only those he trusts ever see who he truly is.”
“By the way,” Anissa said, “Congrats to Courtney for the awesome work she’s done in Opal City! We’re starting to see headlines roll in, and it’s very impressive.” Immediately, everyone in the room around them began to clap and cheer, turning to Courtney who was sitting in her new red-and-green costume.
Courtney looked between her teammates and smiled. “Thanks guys,” she said. “It means a lot.” She turned to Curtis, her expression turning more serious. “Anything on ThirteenthFloor? That seemed like a really big deal when I left, but no mention of it so far.”
Curtis nodded. “Yeah, yeah, that’s a thing. Helga and I are working on reverse-engineering the tech in the buildings, but no results yet. Anyone else have pressing concerns?”
Helga raised her hand. “As you may recall,” she began, “Acrata managed to escape from New Coast after arrest. I recently received word that she may be returning to the city, planning something big. If you spot her, do not be light when apprehending her, and bring her to me as soon as you can.”
“Dammit,” Dan said. “I was hoping I’d never have to see her again. That fight kept me sore for days. We’ll be on the lookout if she returns.”
“Anything else?” Curtis asked.
Marc removed his mask and raised his hand slowly. “Yes,” he said meekly. “Unfortunately, there’s… someone else has shown up here. An old enemy. Curtis, bring up records for Mark Richards, also known as the Tattooed Man.”
Curtis turned to a nearby monitor and began searching the web. He pulled out a mugshot of a tall, bald man with a tattoo of a dragon coiled around the top of his head. On the side of one of his cheeks was another tattoo, a small piece that resembled a rose with a thorny stem. “This your guy?”
“Yes,” Marc said. He stood up and took a deep breath, addressing his teammates. “A long time ago, I lived in a small town in Maryland called Liberty Hill. Standard small-town fare; most of the criminals were just normal people who had a bad run. This man was different. He showed up, and within months he had killed any gang members who didn’t work for him. With every man he murdered, he got a new tattoo, and these weren’t ordinary tattoos. They gave him powers, and every time I fought him he had a new trick up his sleeve.”
He sighed and paused before continuing. “I became obsessed with him. It was unhealthy, and it cost me my marriage. Finally, 15 years ago, I caught him. He served his time, and now it seems like he’s come back for revenge. I'd like to humbly request your help in finding him and making sure he doesn't cause further harm. Mark Richards is incredibly dangerous, and we need to treat any encounter we have with him with utmost caution. He will kill us if we don’t.”
The room fell silent for a few seconds before Curtis broke the silence. “Okay,” he said. “The Tattooed Man, Public Enemy Number One. Don’t worry, Marc; we will make sure that we stop him before he can hurt us.”
≈≈≈≈≈ 🔱 ≈≈≈≈≈
Mark Richards knocked on the door of a townhouse in what looked like any other upscale neighborhood. This development was designed by one of Josiah Power’s friends, he had remembered, but it had never seen use as the designer’s company went down for fraud several months ago. Even though it looked like an ordinary housing development, a far cry from the tourist trap in New Coast’s city center, it was also the home of many of New Coast’s more sinister elements. With the development never having been in use, it was the perfect place for shadowy figures to hide in such a bright city.
The skull on Mark’s forearm sensed some sort of danger. Mark willed it to be quiet as a young woman, tall and lanky with blonde hair and blue accents, opened the door. She seemed to have a lot of tattoos herself. “Wow,” she said, staring at him up and down. “I’m going to need the name of your inker. That is some good art.”
“I’ve had a lot of inkers,” Mark chuckled. “My first tattoo was from a slave-driver in Moldora. The second one was from a serial killer. I tend to get them from the worst of the worst, and it pays off.”
“Ooh, nice,” she said. “I take it you’re here to see the big man? I’m sure he’ll be glad to see you. You should hope so, at least.”
Mark nodded. “I believe we already had an appointment scheduled.”
“You are correct,” she laughed. “He's been talking about you all day.”
Mark walked into the house and down the corridor to a room at the end. If an ordinary homeowner lived here, the room he entered would probably be furnished as a dining room, possibly as a playroom for their children. However, the New Coast crime lord that lived here had turned the room into a sort of makeshift casino; slot machines padded the sides of the walls while a poker table served as the room’s centerpiece.
In the far corner were two couches, on one of which sat the man Mark presumed to be Phosphorus. He looked young and arrogant at first glance, reminding Mark of a cocky kid who thought he could run a business back in Liberty Hill, but who would always fall to Mark in the end. The heart tattoo on the left side of Mark’s chest came from him; his sins were driven by his heart rather than his brain, and that’s why Mark had defeated him. It was a fitting tattoo to remember him by. The major difference between Phosphorus and that kid was abundantly clear, though. Phosphorus wore an unbuttoned white jacket with no shirt; across his chest and extending down his left arm, his skin glowed a brilliant red-orange. Underneath the glow, Mark could see his ribcage, lit up by the man’s special ability.
“Heh, on time I see,” Phosphorus chuckled. “I knew I could count on you.”
Mark took a seat on the couch across from the crime lord. “Of course,” he said. “This business is always about impressions, and I’ve come to know that that means dependability as well as fear. Meet your opponents first, before you destroy them. And I believe that in a couple of months, I may have to destroy you.
“So it’s true then,” Phosphorus said. “You’re gonna hang around a while? That’s unfortunate. Oh well.”
“Nice to meet you. I’d shake your hand, but I’ve been told that’s not really a good idea.” Mark stretched out on the couch, throwing his arms behind his back. “So you’re the Phosphorus, huh? I expected someone a little older to have been behind the work you’ve done. It’s impressive.”
“Call me Alec,” Phosphorus said. He paused for a second. “I’m old enough. Besides, I’ve got a damn good reason why I’m doing this. Pardon the wordplay, but it’s a fire in my heart, so to speak, y’know? A drive.”
Before Mark could respond, Alec’s breathing started tensing up. He turned his head to the doorway of the room. “Melanie! Food!” he shouted. The blonde woman from before quickly came over with a man in a suit, tied up and restrained. She dropped him at Alec’s feet before leaving, not saying a single word.
The man’s expression turned frantic. “No, wait, please. Do anything. Ta--take my kids, instead. My wife. I can help you!” He was quickly shut up by Alec’s searing-hot left hand on his mouth, as the man quickly vaporized into thin air. Only a skeleton remained of where he was once standing.
“Wow,” Mark said, shaking his head. “That is impressive, I have to say. Not exactly a good dude there, either. Guess you know how to pick ‘em.”
“Yeah,” Alec laughed. “I only eat the rich types, people who have no spine or soul. That, and people who disappoint me, of course.” Alec paused for a second. “You know, I never wanted to be a criminal. I started this because I had to; if I don’t feed, I’ll die, and feeding ain’t exactly something you want to do in the open. But now? I’d say it feels pretty good. Not perfect, y’know? But it’s getting there.”
Mark nodded. “I get it, I really do. You know, you and I have the same power, so to speak.”
Alec gave him a confused look.
Mark cleared his throat. “I was on deployment in Moldora several years ago. I was a young soldier, about your age, and I had just killed a few men for the first time. Every day, their voices screamed in my head. So we were taking down this horrible waste of a human being; he had enslaved thousands of men, women and children to work for the worst kind of people. And the night before the raid, I asked him how he did it. That man showed me the art of sin-grafting; for every sin he committed, he added just a bit more ink to his body. He kept the memories of those he killed in the tattoos. Well, I thought it was bullshit, but then he tattooed this dragon onto me.” He pointed at his first and favorite tattoo, the dragon that coiled around his bald head.
“From that day on, whenever I kill someone, I tattoo myself with something to remind me of them. And I always use this special ink, which gives the tattoo life. Power. Doesn’t make it right, but it makes it damn near worth it. Now you, you have to kill people to live. I dunno how you got into that predicament, but you realized the same thing I did. If you get power from your sins, then it’s more than worth committing them, don’tcha think?”
Alec’s expression soured. “I think you’re fucking wrong about me,” he said. He stood up, towering over Mark. The skull on his shoulder sensed that he was in an incredible amount of danger. Mark said nothing; he wanted to see where this would go.
“I’m not a monster,” Alec huffed. “I was a good kid who wanted to do the right thing, and this bitch made me into who I am now. And my father just lets her stay by his side. He doesn’t notice shit. He doesn’t realize who that woman is. And so I’m here to fucking destroy the city he’s created, to burn it down to the bedrock on which it stands.”
Mark raised an eyebrow. “Your father is Josiah Power? I see it. I think you’ll realize you’re a lot more like him than you imagine.”
Alec lunged at Mark, nearly putting a hand on him. Acting quickly, Mark summoned the dragon from the tattoo on his head. Immediately, the ink turned into a violet energy construct of a serpent, lunging forward at Alec and releasing a sonic blast. Alec flew across the room, landing among the slot machines on the other wall.
“See, you’ve got this terrifying power,” Mark chided. “But I got so many years on you it’s hard to imagine. That, Alec, is why I will take this city.”
Alec writhed in pain as Mark stood over him and left. This was not the pain he felt when he hadn’t fed in a while, nor was it the pain he felt from Mark knocking him into the wall. No, this was omnipresent, coating every nerve of his body like it did when he was hungry, but ten times stronger. He cried out, bringing himself to his feet and stumbling out the door of the room. He had someone he needed to see.
≈≈≈≈≈ 🔱 ≈≈≈≈≈
“Help,” Alec gulped, grabbing Helga’s wrist in the hallway of the New Coast Polynesia Resort. He was wearing gloves, of course; he couldn’t let anyone else know about his abilities. Nearly collapsing, Alec straightened himself using Helga’s body as a support.
“Alec,” Helga said, faking a smile. “You know, you are the last person I expected to see today. I have to say, I am very impressed with what you’ve managed to accomplish with your abilities. Seems like they’re treating you better than I had expected.” She paused for a second, looking around for bystanders. There were none. “Come into Room 104 with me, and we can talk. I don’t want to have to do to any others what I did to you.”
The two of them walked further down the hall, entering Helga’s personal lab as Helga closed the door behind him. It was just as pristine, Alec thought, as the one Helga had imprisoned him in, although it was considerably smaller. Alec had only seen the inside of this lab from the small glimpse he had gotten when he had asked Helga to help save the day. The worst mistake of his life, Alec thought. He cared about his father for one moment, wanted to help save his life, and it cost him gravely.
“I take it you have questions about your newfound powers?” Helga turned to the door and latched it shut. “Don’t worry; I’ve soundproofed the room much better since our last encounter. I could yell at the top of my lungs that you were Phosphorus, and Curtis in the next room wouldn’t do so much as to look up from his computer.”
Alec nodded. “You said that this power would kill me. Everything’s starting to hurt like a bitch; I fed on my way here and it didn’t help. I need answers.”
“Well,” Helga said, “I wish I could give you all the answers you need. Primer is a very imprecise science, and it reacts differently for every person that it works on. That being said, none of the powers triggered by your specific primer have killed anyone in less than 6 months. Trust me when I say I’ve done extensive research on this one.”
Alec winced. He imagined Helga Jace, the kind hearted TV personality dedicated to treating people with metahuman conditions, giving hundreds of people the same treatment he had. It made so little sense, but with what he had seen of Helga in the past few months, it still fit perfectly.
Helga continued as Alec sat himself down on a nearby hospital bed draped in thin paper. “That being said, any sort of pain you might experience is par for the course, and none of it is a sign of your impending death. Most of it will make you want to die, but you’ll be fine for several more months at least. Now, unfortunately, I still have work to do that my team can’t know about, so curing you would not benefit me. But so far, you’ve been exemplary in your discretion about these matters. Not to mention the immense distraction you’re providing for them; they barely have time to think about anything I’m doing.”
Alec nodded. He resisted attacking Helga outright, as he knew she was his only chance at salvation. That did not mean that he wasn’t ready to do so. Instead, he looked her in the eyes and weakly spoke. “Will this new pain go away?”
“Hard to tell. I could help run some tests, but as hard as it may seem to imagine, I don’t know everything about every power that comes my way. Most likely, though, there will be high points and low points, as there are with every disease. I can tell from your demeanor, for example, that you’re feeling significantly less pain than when you literally grabbed me, even if it doesn’t feel that way. By the way, don’t scare an old lady like that, especially with your specific ability.” Helga chuckled wildly. Alec felt sick to his stomach, even though these past few months had hardened him. This, he thought, was what true monsters looked like.
“Fine,” Alec said, standing up. “You know what? I don’t need any more help. I got money, I got power, I got ladies, and it’s all because of your experiment. When the power does start to kill me, I’ll be here. But until then, I’m not coming through this door again.”
Alec left Room 104 and began to leave the hotel. Helga was right; as he got up, the pain had begun to fade. After a few seconds, it had all but disappeared for the time being. He got to the lobby, where he immediately noticed a new complication. Josiah Power, his father, was standing over the desk, talking to the receptionist. Before he could turn the other way, he saw Alec standing there. He fell silent, his gaze softening.
“Alec,” he muttered, coming closer. “I thought… I thought you left the city.”
The rage that Alec felt that first night in the hotel began to bubble up again, but he kept it down. “Hey, Dad. Yeah, I was gone for a while, but I’m… I couldn’t leave.” He paused, considering his next words carefully. “I think I’m ready to talk to you again.”
“That’s fantastic,” Josiah smiled. “Take your time; you don’t owe me anything. But if you want, maybe we could get dinner sometime?”
Alec nodded. “I think I’d like that.” It was a lie, he told himself; he had to come up with something on the spot. But it worked in his favor; if he had a relationship with his father again, the betrayal would be much sweeter when he got to that point. He couldn’t wait to see Josiah’s face as he realized who he truly was. But that had to wait.
As he left the lobby, he smiled. The pain may come back, but those who deserved it would also feel his pain in due time.

”Alright,” Curtis said through his microphone. ”We’ve spotted the Tattooed Man in Kim’s area. Anyone currently in the field, converge on 44th Street and H. We need to take him down sooner than later.”
“Got it,” Ray said, hovering high above Josiah’s central shopping district in New Coast before taking off due west. Below him, Thunder, Blue Devil and Commander Steel patrolled the streets; each of them began to make their way to the location in question through a series of Dan’s portals. As he arrived on location, Ray began to take in the sites around him.
The area of the city that one of Josiah’s associates, Terrence Kim, developed felt much more like a normal city than a theme park. That said, it still felt like a theme park, if only because of how sleek and untouched the buildings were. Towering white-and-blue skyscrapers surrounded the wide streets of this area, with tropical foliage in planter boxes along the sidewalks. Palm trees dotted the curbsides, which featured parking spaces where the cars would face the curb. What took Ray by surprise the most, however, was how empty this part was. Not all of Kim’s territory was available to the public yet; only the bare minimum was completed.
Ray landed on the street as Dan, Anissa and Marc portalled in behind him. Several blocks ahead of them, the Tattooed Man was smoking a cigar. He quickly noticed them and put it out before turning to them.
The Tattooed Man let out a hearty chuckle as he took a few steps forward. “Well, well, well. You finally found me. Hey Marc, how’s the missus doing? You know, I could tell that she was stalking me when I got out. I served my time, why do I need to get harassed for what I’ve already done?”
“Seems like it was well worth it,” Commander Steel said. “Considering where you ended up, Mark, you can’t take the high ground here..”
“This small talk was never my favorite part. Let’s get this over with.” Two violet wings of energy sprouted from the Tattooed Man’s back, allowing him to tower over the other heroes. Ray immediately met him in the sky. From a sword tattoo on his left arm, he summoned a blade of energy that he immediately gripped with both hands before charging at Ray.
Ray dodged the Tattooed Man’s first attack, responding with a barrage of light blasts. From the ground, Commander Steel fired his own bolts of energy from the wrist-cannons Helga had designed for him. The sword dissolved and was replaced by a shield that grew from a small tattoo on the back of the criminal’s left hand. For several seconds, the Tattooed Man sustained the heroes’ continuous fire, but it was interrupted when the Blue Devil portalled onto the shield and began punching at it over and over again. The Tattooed Man dissolved the shield and dived out of the way, flying higher to avoid further attacks. Ray chased after him and Dan portalled himself back onto the ground.
“Now this, this is fun,” the villain chuckled to himself. “Marc, why couldn’t you learn to fly, or build some glider or something? Sky battles are awesome!” The dragon on the top of the Tattooed Man’s head came loose, chasing after Ray. He fired out a concentrated beam of light while flying away, but the dragon kept going. Before he could stop it, the dragon screamed, letting loose a powerful high-pitched sound, and Ray fell to the floor.
The Tattooed Man landed on the ground, his wings dissolving as he stood over the fallen hero. “Now this will be a fun one to ink. I wonder, how should I remember you by? I’d do a lightbulb, but I don’t think you’re that bright to begin with.”
A bolt of energy from Marc’s cannon stopped the villain from finishing Ray off, hitting his right shoulder and making him turn to the other heroes. Thunder leapt up onto the side of a nearby high-rise, tackling the criminal from behind as he was distracted. She began to force a pair of handcuffs onto him, but the Tattooed Man quickly summoned his wings again, knocking Thunder down as he turned to the skies.
The lightning tattoo on the villain’s right arm began to let out a violet glow. From the skies, he fired powerful beams of lightning. The first hit Anissa, knocking her down; the second and third were fired at Commander Steel. A metal shield expanded from the hero’s own right arm, protecting him. As the Tattooed Man flew down, a portal from the Blue Devil intercepted him and brought him face-to-face with the two heroes left standing.
The Tattooed Man readied another bolt, knocking Dan clean out. “Now,” he chided, “it’s just the two of us. Like old times, isn’t it?” He resummoned the sword and began exchanging blows with the soldier. Commander Steel quickly discharged another energy blast, which knocked the Tattooed Man a few steps backwards as he began to charge up another lightning bolt.
He stopped. The skull tattoo on his shoulder began to sense another presence nearby.
From above, another hero flew down, clad in a pristine silver costume with glowing accents. In the center was the letter “T” in a circle, clearly the symbol of the hero Mister Terrific. He glided on what looked like two green glowing disks that appeared to be made of pure energy. He looked down at some sort of holographic console emanating from his wrist. The Tattooed Man quickly recognized that this must be the Blue Devil’s associate, the one who once worked for Mister Terrific. The villain was used to recognizing Commander Steel’s body language, even behind that mask of his, and he knew that his enemy was just as surprised as he was.
The new hero’s drones quickly surrounded the Tattooed Man, opening fire with green laser-blasts all around him. The Tattooed Man couldn’t take it, and quickly fell unconscious himself.
”Hey,” Curtis said as he flew down. ”I noticed you needed help.”
≈≈≈≈≈ 🔱 ≈≈≈≈≈
“So, wait,” Ray began to say as the heroes converged in Room 103. Helga had just finished performing medical care on the three members of Coastguard who were knocked out during the battle, and they were now calling a meeting to discuss what had happened. “You’re--you’re a hero now? When?”
Curtis nodded. “Not always; I’ll be on comms for a lot of the time. But when you guys need it, Helga and I developed this suit. I’ll be calling myself the Technocrat.”
“Cool,” Ray said. He poked at the Technocrat suit, which was standing up in the corner of the room, connected to a charger.
“I’d have to disagree,” Anissa said. “Curtis, you’re incredibly important to us. We can’t risk something happening to you.”
Curtis nodded. “Well, unfortunately, it’s not really your choice. I’ll make extra sure to choose my battles; don’t worry. But it’s important to me that you are all safe. The Tattooed Man would’ve killed all of you if I hadn’t come out there. And with Courtney in Opal half the time and Cisco… you know… we need more hands on deck.”
“He would’ve killed you, too, if he had known you were coming,” Anissa remarked. “And now, everyone who comes to New Coast will know about you. Nothing’s changed; you just had the element of surprise this time.”
Dan, who was sitting in the corner, finally spoke up. “Look,” he said. “I get why you’re worried, Anissa, I really do. I’m worried, too; like, really terrified outta my mind that my friend’s gonna get hurt doing this. But if there’s someone who can pull off this stuff, it’s Curtis. I wouldn’t try and stop him, either; he’s a very stubborn man.”
“Alright,” Anissa huffed. “But I’m not gonna like it.”
“The only question,” Marc laughed, “is what flavor of ice cream he’s gonna be. I can’t think of any grey ice-creams.”
“That’s for Josiah to figure out,” Curtis smiled. “If I had to pick? Probably mint chocolate-chip. All of your weird fruit flavors are upsetting to the palate.”
Everyone laughed around them, except for Anissa. It still didn’t feel right for Curtis to be going out there, and she knew that feeling wouldn’t change. But they were right; she had to deal with it.
≈≈≈≈≈ 🔱 ≈≈≈≈≈
Mark Richards woke up. His surroundings didn’t feel familiar, but they clearly weren’t any sort of prison. The building he found himself in was some sort of makeshift cabin made of wood. He was tied to a wooden chair on a grass floor. He looked at the ceiling; above him, the panels of wood were ornately painted in patterns of green and silver.
“Where am I?” he asked, dazed.
A man walked over to him in a red-and-brown robe. Draped over him was a green cape decorated with one glowing red gemstone on it. The first thing Mark noticed about his face was his two piercing green eyes, which seemed to see into his soul.
“Greetings, Mark,” the man said. “I know you have many questions, but trust me when I say I am not an enemy.”
Mark chuckled dryly. “When I’m tied to a chair like this, that’s usually hard to imagine.”
“We both know that those bindings would not hold you if you did not want them to,” the man said in a monotone voice. “We simply had to restrain you, as you tended to flail around when unconscious.” He walked over to Mark and untied the knots that kept him tied to the chair. “My name is Samuel, and we have the same goals: to destroy Coastguard and to rule New Coast City. I am gathering people close to the Coastguard, people with vendettas against their members. You fit these criteria easily; another one of these people has already been clamoring to meet you.”
A tall, thin man with pale skin and dark hair walked over to him. He wore a suit and tie that had clearly been hastily put on. Mark stood up and shook his hand.
“Hi,” he smiled, speaking in a nasal voice. “Michael Clarion, occultist extraordinaire. Pleased to meet you. I also just got out of prison. Now, I have a lot of questions about your tattoos. They are mystical in origin, correct? I’m very interested to discuss the finer points of this with you.”

What people don't know, because they aren't ready to.

Civilization ended many years ago. The only thing alive are card houses and casinos. They juggle the never ending problems of society by manipulating the currency through a system of "goochers". Goochers defy the odds upon any other random situation outside of the paper chase or the hustle that "cash only" venues entail.
An example of a well known goocher took place at a day care center just outside of a small city (or was it a city mall) in Maryland. The kids were asked to participate in "sharing" which is something they did every other Friday. On one such Friday, all nine of the children there that day brought the same toy to share. The moments preceding this goocher were looked into and it was found to happen at random, and there was no planning, and no coordinating to manipulate the outcome. It was believed to be coincidence.
The first use of the word "goocher" happens in Goonies, and there's another mention of the word in "Stand By Me" giving a fictional yet accurate depiction of what exactly a goocher is in the context of the storyline.
A goocher is not a yatzee. In the dice game yatzee, the objective is to get all six dice to roll the same number with in three roles. The difference of course this all happens at the hand of one player. A goocher, on the otherhand, would be like six different players rolling the one dice each, once. Out of coincidence they all get the same number.
Drawing straws is goocher proof, because you can't make the short straw for bad odds.
Now with the knowledge of civilization having already ended, and how it is held together for us to enjoy otherwise, by a system of coincidences, please pay your tab.
Thanks

Most underrated cities/towns in Maryland?

What cities and towns in Maryland do you think are underrated, and why? This is my list. By no means is this an all-inclusive list. I am sure there are many more towns and cities in Maryland that are underrated, it's just that I am only familiar with so many areas in Maryland that I may not have gotten everything. Besides, part of the reason I started this thread is because I wanted to hear about any towns I didn't mention in order to find more places to venture to :).
FREDERICK: Even though it is stereotyped to be hicky, redneck, and in the middle of nowhere, I don't find this to be the case. Downtown Frederick is a nice, diverse, and vibrant area. It is where the suburbs of DC and the Appalachia mountain region of Western Maryland meet, and the influences from both sides give Frederick a very interesting and unique vibe. There are lots of great restaurants, entertainment, and art scenes as well.
CROFTON/ODENTON/GAMBRILLS: This area is underrated. It is often seen as just an extension of Annapolis, and while they are suburban towns near Annapolis, there is a lot of new shopping and entertainment in this area. The public schools in the area are some of the best in the state, and with the opening of a brand new high school in Crofton soon, there are a lot of reasons for people to consider living there. In addition to being very close to Annapolis, this area also has very easy access to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore
ARNOLD/SEVERNA PARK: Beautiful suburbs of Annapolis with a lot of historic water and Chesapeake Bay sailing culture. Some of the best public schools in Maryland (Severna Park HS and Broadneck HS)
DAVIDSONVILLE: You wouldn't feel like you're only 25-30 minutes away from Washington, D.C. and only 10 minutes away from Annapolis when you're here. You see lots of mansions on plotted on large swaths of land and it feels rural and quiet. This area is very unique because it is rural, yet it defies all stereotypes of rural-ness. Majority of the residents hold white-collar jobs, the median income of Davidsonville is among the highest in all of Maryland, and the residents are very educated. It is a great place to live if you want to live near urban areas in a top notch school district yet want quiet and privacy. It is a remnant of AACos past heritage.
IJAMESVILE: This is a suburb of DC in Frederick County, near the MoCo border that many have never heard of. It has top-notch schools and good access to DC and Frederick. Similar to Davidsonville, it defies stereotypes of rural-ness because it is majority white collar and extremely wealthy.
HANOVER: A unique town that is split between two counties: Anne Arundel and Howard. It is just 10-15 minutes away from Baltimore City. Residents tend to be upper middle-class and wealthy, though there is good socio-economic diversity. It is also 25 minutes away from Annapolis, 5 minutes away from Ft. Meade, right near BWI, and about 40 minutes away from DC. Hanover is home to the Arundel Mills Mall which has many great stores, restaurants, and a casino. If you live on the Howard County side, you also get top-notch public school districts, but if you live on the Anne Arundel side, you are stuck with awful public schools.
TAKOMA PARK: A one-of-a-kind suburb just outside of Washington, D.C. It is extremely progressive and it is extremely common to see gay couples holding hands and churches and houses with pride flags/immigrant supporting signs. The schools in the area are good and there are many unique resturaunts in the area. It is also very socioeconomically and racially diverse and is one of the more affordable (good) suburbs of DC to live in.
CUMBERLAND: This city is very cool because it was once the most populous and industrialized city in all of Maryland, and as such, it has an abandoned large city vibe. It is very pretty and has a Western European/German vibe to it as well.
BOWIE: This town is ideally located 20 minutes away from Annapolis and Washington, D.C. There is a lot of good shopping and entertainment, and you're also very close to shopping/entertainment in Crofton. Six Flags is also here.
COLLEGE PARK: There is more to College Park than just the University of Maryland's flagship campus. There are lots of great resturaunts, entertainment, shopping, and dining as well. Being near a large top-ranked public research university is also a huge plus though. You are also just outside of Washington, D.C. However, it is only recommended to visit College Park, not live in it (unless you are a student at the University of Maryland, College Park and live on/near campus). There is some concerns with crime in College Park.
NORTH BEACH: A really good alternative to Ocean City if you live in the Baltimore-Washington D.C. metro area.
TOWSON: It is one of the best, if the not the best suburb of Baltimore. Great downtown, unique dining, and an amazing mall. Also has very amazing public schools.
LAUREL: A good, ethnically diverse suburb of D.C. and Baltimore with good shopping and dining.
PIKESVILLE: A cool area near Baltimore with strong Jewish culture and many kosher resturaunts/markets. You'll find some of the best Jewish food in the entire country there.
BEL AIR: A good mix of rural Northeastern Maryland and suburban Baltimore. Good schools, dining, and entertainment.
ELKRIDGE/SAVAGE: Although this area is often just considered to be an extension of Columbia and Ellicott City, Elkridge has some of the best shopping, dining, and entertainment in all of HoCo. Savage also has the historic Savage mill. Great public schools.

The first phase includes allowing certain small businesses to reopen, outdoor gym glasses, recreational activities to continue, and allowing religious gatherings of limited attendance. Certain medical procedures will be allowed to continue as well.
The second phase allows raising the minimum number of people allowed in a gathering, childcare services reopening, indoor gyms, the return of transit schedules, and bars and restaurants reopening under certain conditions.

It doesnt feel safe being a woman anymore... (if it was ever safe to begin with)

I've lived in the Washington DC area (known as the DMV for DC, Maryland, and Virgina) since the 90s. We lived close to the UMD in a county that's notorious for being shitty. I grew up in a neighborhood that was heavily impacted by 9/11 and the DC sniper, but even with stuff like that happening, I felt fairly safe. I could walk to local places with friends or by myself with no issues.
After college (graduated in 2015) its felt like shits getting so much worse. I worked at a vet clinic down the street from my parents house and couldn't walk home at night bc even though it was well lit, I'd still get randos following me or harassing me from their cars. We had to have a buddy with us at work to take out the trash bc the bar next to us was known to be sketchy.
I moved to a different part of the county to be closer to my next job and it was so much worse. I lived about a quarter mile from a shopping center and I'd walk to it often to save gas money. I stopped after I was harassed by a fake Lyft driver trying to convince me to get in his car and another time I was followed in close pursuit by a guy and ran to chick fil a where they calmed me down and I waited for my husband to pick me up. Not even my job there was safe. It was a family owned business and they found out their parking lot was being used as a sex trafficking exchange after a brown paper bag was found under an employees car and it turned out to be a lot of cash and pics of women. We werent allowed to be in the parking lots alone after that.
We are now in our house in a different county, safer job, and a much safer neighborhood. However I keep seeing posts on social media about kidnappings and sex trafficking happening where I use to live. At malls, CVS, and places I use to frequent. Even issues with it at surrounding schools and the UMD. The closest mall to me now is known for these issues especially since it's by the casino.
It's been insane the past few weeks. New posts and emails on a near daily basis. Kids, teens, adults... no one is safe. I have so much anxiety about going anywhere alone now. I always have bc girls are raised to be suspicious, but now I'm just scared. I'm always anxious being out doing anything bc I'm on my guard to protect myself... I cant just move to a new city bc its a problem in all cities. I feel like it's not safe anywhere anymore... I know I'm not alone in feeling like this, but who else feel like this?

A STADIUM'S WALKABILITY: Using Google Maps, I look at each stadium's walkability and locale

Walkability is something that's important to a stadium. There has to be activity around the stadium for fans to do before and after games. A few stadiums have excellent walkability, while others are terrible. I'll analyze each stadium using Google Maps, as I haven't been to many of these places, and I'd appreciate input from you guys about other things from each stadium that add to the walkability of a stadium.
If anyone has anything to add or correct, please comment. Thank you!

Share your favorite locally owned restaurants that are often empty.

I love restaurants. Some of my favorite places are little local shops that don't get nearly as many customers as they deserve. It makes me sad when places like Johnny Mcguires go out of business, and I don't get to eat there anymore. So I want to share some of my favorite places that will probably go out of business soon. I don't really think there's anything we can do to save them, but you should at least try them while you can.
These are a few that come to the top of my head. I'm sure I'll think of more later.
Buldogis
I've been craving a Buldogis hot dog with korean bbq beef and home made mayo on it so bad. This place is close to Red Rock Casino.
Volcano Grille
This little place is just south of Arroyo Crossing, near 215 and Rainbow on the south side. The star of their show is the sauce bar. The sweet ginger sauce is fantastic.
Giuseppe's
Just north of 215 on Durango, in the southwest corner of 215. If you like chicken parm at all, get their Crusted Chicken Mozzarella. It doesn't have the heavy breading of chicken parm, and it is one of my favorite Italian dishes in this town at any price.
Pho Thanh Huong
If you want pho, go to Pho Saigon 8 on Spring Mountain. If you want an absolutely amazing sandwich for $3, get the BBQ pork sandwich here. It is in a grungy little strip mall south of UNLV on the SW corner of Trop and Maryland.
What are your favorites?

T is for Terrified

NEW MESSAGE: FFEC 2017 DIRECTOR +4 OTHERS
Hello everyone! I hope all of you make it here to Harrisburg! Tomorrow will be the first day of the 20th Freddy Fazbear Entertainment Convention. You all will be staying at the Hilton Harrisburg near the Convention Center. More information will be provided in the following link...
My mind is completely blank right now. I am on a two-hour flight to Pennsylvania and I am still in shock that my curiosity and mind took me this far.
NEW MESSAGE: PETE Yo how are you doing bro, i arrived at the airport.
What have I gotten myself into?? I still can’t believe that a stupid theory and hobby have gotten me this far. I look down at my empty paper and think about what I need to say in my part of the panel.
Freddy’s was the biggest incident that has ever happened involving children at a locale of this nature. Big names have talked about this incident such as the likes of Stephen King and James Patterson, and this big tragedy has even garnered a fanbase among the paranormal investigation community. Even though it has been almost 26 years, some families are still affected by what had happened. I have spok-
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Midway through my writing, I get a text message.
NEW MESSAGE: PETE Dude, I think you need to hear this. “New development in the suicide of a 16-year old student; Police uncover deeper meaning.” Just hit the WaPo this morning. It talks about this Tanner Albright kid, who dropped out of school and went into hiding. In a nutshell, I am on to something. Tell you more at the port :)
I remember hearing about that, barely a blip on the newsfeed compared to all that coverage about the solar eclipse. That was an interesting text. Why not tell me now. You know what, screw it, I’ll just continue writing.
I have spoken at length about the so-called Missing Children Incident where five children went missing at the pizzeria back in the early 1990s, the disappearances of various night staff over the years, and the shady relationship between Fazbear Entertainment and Afton Robotics. I am here to clear everything u-

Damnit Pete!
NEW MESSAGE: PETE Just a small check in on u. I herd the plane was delayed. Tru?
Just then, the pilot made an announcement:

“Hello folks, we are having a rough time here so just sit back for a moment. Put on your seatbelts everybody!”

You serious right now??? Even in 2017 a brutha can't get a break!

NEW MESSAGE: UNKNOWN ID I KNOW WHERE YOU ARE. YOU CAN'T HIDE.
...
WHAT THE ABSOLUTE FUCK
Maybe it was just a simple prank. Let me not freak out the person next to me and piss my pants in the actual piss place.
Luckily I am right next to the bathroom.
I open the door and look in the mirror.
Yo, Isiah, chill out dude. It’s good.
I go back to my seat and go back to my music.
Oh shoot
I feel the migraine coming as the cabin rocks under the turbulence. Shit…
Pete's going to be so mad when he finds out… oh well.
Pete's waiting for me past security
“Ayyee, wassup my guy.” Pete greets me.
“Sup,” I reply.
“How long have you been waiting here, P?”
“Four hours. You hungry from that flight?”
“Yeah, let’s get something to eat.”
We walk around the airport looking for something to eat.
“Mickey Ds?”
“Hell yeah.”
We walk to the McDonald's across from us to get what I think is dinner. We wait in line to get our food. Pete orders a Big Mac and I order a normal cheeseburger with a milkshake. We sit down at the dining plaza tables and start eating.
“So how was your flight?” Pete asks.
"Bit rough," I reply.
"No shit, Isiah!" He pauses then asks, "you been taking the percs again?"
"Uhh..."
"Man, you gotta cut that shit out!"
"It's aiight… So… whatchu got?"
Pete pulls up the webpage on his iPad; it's that Washington Post article he mentioned in the text earlier, with a picture showing cops at some backwoods crime scene complete with yellow tape. The page linked to another webpage, this one being a local news site for the St. George Metropolitan Area:
Brushton Township police say that Tanner Albright, a high school student that committed suicide several weeks back, had plans to commit mass murder.
Hurricane Police Chief Clay Burke said in a news conference yesterday that detectives found further writings dated August 8 to August 20, detailing a five-step plan for a major killing spree.
An entry dated Aug. 16 said, "...this will be bigger than anything this country's ever seen, .......I've been planning this for a long time, it's going to be so much fun. They won't expect a thing. It will be a stain on American history unlike anything like it."
The entries also praised William Afton of Afton Robotics and the recently-deceased Henry Fasbach of Fazbear Entertainment, making heavy references to the series of child murders throughout the 1990s, believed to have been committed by someone impersonating a mascot at the pizzeria. An entry dated Aug. 17 said, "I'll look into those scared little bitches eyes before I kill them and watch the life pour out of their bodies like the river Nile ... have followers because I'm so awesome I know someone will follow me just like I followed William Afton's ... me and them want close to the same thing, It's going to be fun......They say oh this is horrible but they don't think like us like me Henry and William...."
Tanner's writings made heavy references to Satanism and the occult, and detectives believe the boy expected to die and then "rise again" on August 21, the day of a major solar eclipse. A memo entry dated Aug. 18 said, ".....I'm going to die doing it, I hate those people, when they interview my parents and ask how they didn't see the signs they should know it's not them it's me and it's because of how I see the world....I'll hurt and destroy something so much bigger and they'll all see....."
He had gone missing a week before his body was found nearby an abandoned bunker that he had apparently been inhabiting for the last few months of his high school attendance before dropping out.
On Thursday, the Washington County Medical Examiner ruled Tanner's death inconclusive.
Investigation into Tanner's home was rendered impossible due to a major break-in soon after the body was discovered, with the intruder stealing most if not all of Tanner's belongings and heavily vandalizing the remainder.
Police say the investigation will continue with additional interviews and review of the boy's other documents.
School counselor Harvey Dunn issued a news release Thursday afternoon, noting increased presence by law enforcement in all district buildings.
Oookay… damn. That was one messed-up kid. One look at this pasty white boy's face and I immediately think "this kid be blastin' on them fools". At least he didn't go down that route...
"And you're showing me this because..."
Pete pulls out a folder from his convention bag and shoves it to me. "Dude, it gets even weirder. This guy on Freddit, OracleIntuition, sent me these" he gestures to the contents of the folder; several photographs of a really crappy cosplay of Freddy that someone tried to make look "oh so sp00py" by wrapping red yarn all over it, dunno why.
"So it's a photo of some cosplayer, what does this have to do with-"
"Bruh, that's what I told him too. But he swears 1000% that this is the real deal, some real spooky shit. Like a real-life version of all those urban legends about the animatronics walkin' around at night? And you know the weirdest part? He says this is what Tanner meant when he said 'rise again'"
"Naw… you saying this kid turn himself into a Freddy??" I stop and think for a second.
“This is on some next level werewolf shit bro, I don’t think it’s real. It could be some really thought out fanfic.” I reply.
“Sure, whatever you say. Don’t start crying and running to me when some satanic ‘I Need Jesus’ Freddy comes for your ass.”
Yo, this is forreal on some other worldly stuff. I don’t think there is that much behind this thing, and I am a theorist who talks about dead children for god’s sake.
“Anyways, you wanna know what happened to me on the plane?” I say.
“Let me guess, the perc. I already told you-”
“No, I got this weird ass stalker level text. Sounded like someone from ISIS or some shit.” I show Pete the text message.
“How many codes have you been cracking my dude, Tanner the spirit school shooter is about to murder your ass.” Pete replies.
“This is not funny. I am hella scared right now. Why me though?”
“In all seriousness, this could be a joke or a wrong number thing. Either way it’s weird.”
“True bu-”
CAN I NOT GET INTERRUPTED FOR THE FIRST TIME.
“Hi guys, mind if I join you?” a familiar posh-accented voice says.
“Well, you could have as……. HOLY SHIT!” I scream, trying not to freak out even more.
To my surprise, it’s Dawko. The Dawko; the gamer and theorist. Is this real right now?
“Excuse my language, hello, of course you can join us.”
Pete and I give each other a glare. It’s the myth, the man, the legend, Dawko!!
“Sorry for my manners, my name is Isiah and this is Pete. I assume you are also here for the convention?”
“Oh yeah, I am. Are you part of a panel or a fan?”
“I am in the panel with my friend over here, we are under the name of ‘TheFreddleSquad’. You've probably seen our video on Freddy's, that is why we are here.”
“Ah yes I have, you are on the panel with me I think, right? I’ll check the schedule the director gave us.” Dawko looks down at his phone. “Yep.”
"So you just got here too? How was the flight?"
"Oh my God, 10 hours of torture all the way from Heathrow I swear," replies Dawko while stretching his back.
"I can't believe FazCon's been around for like 20 years, and 'cause of what? 'cause of some creepy urban legends here or there? I mean, have you seen the place? 'So come on down to mechanical bear pizza and child casino!!!'" we all get a good giggle out of that one.
We finish eating and we get all our luggage from pickup and we call an Uber.
We see our driver and he drives us to our hotel.
“Have a nice day!” Dawko shouts as he waves us off.
We wave back.
Approaching the lobby, it becomes pretty clear that we're not the only Faz-fans holed up in this joint. Already the place is full of enthusiasts and even some cosplayers. A cardboard Freddy sat down reading his tablet while some Foxy chicks (in BOTH senses of the word) hung round the pillars taking selfies. I even saw these two high as fuck guys dressed in black animal suits and I don't mean black like they used ink for the Ice Bucket challenge but like Vantablack shit.
Me and Pete get our room key from the counter and take the elevator up.
“Damn, we met Dawko.” I say.
“Yes, yes we did.” Pete replies
We get to our room and look around.
“I am glad we chose to upgrade to the two-room suite.” Pete says as he savours the moment.
I also savour it, as we examine every feature of the room, from the king-sized bed to the soft floors, everything is so perfect. While Pete flops down on the bed, I pull out my Surface Pro 4 and check the forums.
"Yo Pete check this out"
I'm on OracleIntuition's instagram account; there's a black and white selfie of a professional photographer, with images far superior to the ones Pete showed me at the airport. The caption was what piqued my interest, however:
oracleintuition Just flew into Harrisburg Intl.! Next stop, FazCon 2017!!!! 😊😄 #oracleintuition #ffp #freddy convention #fazcon
He's here?? Oh this might actually be interesting. I wonder what he has to say about the photos. But, time waits for no bruthas. We pack our gear and head off down the 20-minute walk from the Hilton to the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex, where the FazCon is being held. Strolling past the milling tourists and congoers, we behold the massive convention center, the capital of Freddy's Fandom for the next 4 days. We take a quick power nap because we didn't go to sleep, and it's 6:30 AM and we have to arrive in an hour.
Still, that short nap's long enough for me to have this strange dream. I'm a little boy again, barely knee height and I'm at the pizzeria during a birthday party. I try to get closer but I trip and fall, and by the time I get up, the whole place is dark and empty, like in the middle of the night. Suddenly, I hear movement and a little kid struggling as he's being pushed around by this dude in a purple uniform, squealing all the while because his mouth's been covered. They disappear behind the door and I can hear muffled struggling behind it. I walk towards the door, but there's this huge stink and some weird-ass feeling I can't place. I'm scared.
The stage lights up and there's Freddy, except… where's Bonnie and Chica??? Plus, Freddy's facing the wrong way! I have a choice… go to that door or go to Freddy. I also get this tingling pressure and somehow I know that if I take my eyes off of Freddy for even one second…
Suddenly the door bursts open, breaking my concentration. Instinctively I turn to look and… nothing. Just an empty room. Oh fuck... I want, no, need to get to that door because if I don't, it's going to get me. Doesn't matter what "it" is. I break into a run, but the pizzeria seems to stretch out as my heart hammers, but I finally make it through the door, slamming it behind me. I wait for a few moments, straining to hear if what's out there's gone. Then slowly I turn arou-

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I get up with a start, breathing heavily. just a dream, Isiah, just a dream. Shit… I shouldn't have let them photos get to me… fuck. I turn and look at the clock. Oh, 7:05, still have time. I wake up Pete, we wash our faces, and finally leave the hotel, before hailing a taxi to the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex where the FazCon takes place.
And with that, we march headlong into the convention center.

WOW.

It. Was. HUGE.
To any '90s kid who was raised on a healthy diet of Freddy's pizza and Surge, this place was practically heaven. The halls were transformed into a giant Freddy Fazbear's pizzeria/museum with practically everything that would satisfy your inner child for days on end! There were arcades of all kinds, deluxe ball pits we could play in for hours on end, vintage Freddy's memorabilia on display including signs, posters, even some old relics like animatronics that never made it to production, each carefully labeled and presented like fashion mannequins at the mall. But instead of rowdy screaming children, the place was crammed full of excited teens and adults, many of whom were having just as much fun as they would at a Dave & Buster's. Tokens clattered as attendees queued up to play the arcade games as if this was Atlantic City instead of Pennsylvania. A group of highschoolers howled and high-fived as they won a goodstuff Bonnie plush at the claw machine. Not to mention the cosplayers. It was like back at the hotel but magnified a hundred fold, and some of the outfits were so good that it was difficult to tell whether they were just here to have fun or whether they were part of the exhibit! Passing by a Foxy and a Mangle dancing to Gangnam Style while waving around a Nerf gun, we entered a room labeled "CAM 01" just in time to watch a riffed vintage episode of Fredbear and Friends! that had everyone laughing their asses off for nearly the full 20 minutes.
After having my fun, I go to rehearsal for my panel. I see multiple familiar faces from FusionZ to WHAT Stephen King?! STEPHEN KING HOLY SHIT I JUST NOTICED. What the hell is he doing here? Isn't he supposed to be writing a book about a gay guy or something? Now I wish I hadn't sold my 1st edition copy of "Under the Dome" before getting his autograph (ugh!) I am going to go speak with him, and hopefully don't make a nuisance out of myself. “Hey Mr. King, odd seeing you around these parts?” I say. “Please, call me Stephen.” he replies. I JUST GOT PERMISSION TO CALL STEPHEN KING ON A FIRST-NAME BASIS OH MY GOD. “So what panel are you on, Stephen?” I just had to rub it in. “Panel 3.”
“Really? So am I!”
“Great! I don't really tell people this but, I am a huge fan of yours, your theories helped me write my book!”
Did Stephen King just call me one of his inspirations??????
FREDDLE SCREECH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
We stand there for a while.
“Alright then, catch you later!” I say.
Stephen walks away then waves.
"EVERYONE IN PANEL 3 PLEASE APPROACH THE FRONT FOR REHEARSAL” a man says over the speaker system
Alright… it's showtime.
It’s finally time for the biggest moment of my so-called career. I see the other panelists around me, most I met during rehearsal. I settle down in my seat while Pete plops down next to me.
“You ready bro?” Pete asks me.
“Yeah, I guess.”
"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN PLEASE WELCOME, FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, THE CONSPIRACY THEORIST GROUP WITH OVER A MILLION SUBSCRIBERS ON YOUTUBE, THE FREDDLE SQUAD!!!"
Moment of truth time.
I get up to give my speech.
"Thank you! We are The Freddle Squad and it's so good to be back! Shout out to my boy Pete, FusionZ, Dawko, and the one and only Stephen King himself!"
I wait for the applause to die down before continuing. "Now, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria was the biggest scandal that has ever happened involving children at a locale of this nature. Big names have talked about the strange phenomena surrounding the restaurant, such as the likes of Stephen King and James Patterson, and this big tragedy has even garnered a fanbase among the paranormal investigation community. Even though it has been almost 26 years, some families are still affected by what had happened. I have spoken at length about the so-called Missing Children Incident where five children disappeared from the pizzeria back in the early 1990s, the unknown whereabouts of various night staff over the years, and the shady relationship between Fazbear Entertainment and Afton Robotics. Pete and I have been researching this for the past few years and we are now here to clear everything up."
I give Pete a soft kick which means it’s his turn.
“As my partner said, these incidents weren’t accidents. The long running partnership between Afton Robotics and Fazbear Entertainment isn’t as sweet as you think. Rumors have been going around that the company owner William Afton, presumably deceased, and his good friend, the late Fazbear Entertainment owner, Henry Fasbach, who had recently taken his own life this past Spring, had a pretty good, hidden friendship when they weren’t making headlines, almost too good of a friendship. Bonding over the experience of having lost their only daughter, they plotted on getting revenge on their own creations. In Henry’s letter before his passing, he wrote 'I was absolutely infuriated and ashamed of my actions, my daughter had died in the hands of my creations. I wanted for people to know the pain.'
Henry and William's plan was to sabotage their own beloved animatronics, to prevent any future tragedy; though both William and Henry were thought to have had shady connections to various - shall I say it - suspicious suppliers and other companies, they felt confident in their success, that is until William's apparent disappearance about a decade later. Henry himself would soon vanish from public spectacle to devote to his research, shunning everyone, including family and friends. With Henry dead, and his ex-wife and nephew not talking, we can only speculate exactly what he discovered and the rationale behind his actions."
And with that we continue into our Freddle Squad spiel, enumerating the known facts about the tangled case that lay before us and then entertaining the most common theories as to what truly went down back at Freddy's. When we finish, the moderator sets up this round table like on ABC, where we discuss and debate the motives and history of the whole sordid affair. All in all, it's really fun, and we're quite proud of ourselves, now that we're talking on par with all the bigshots of this field!
"Well that was fun!" Pete exclaims in relief once we finish signing autographs and get ready to head out.
"Man Pete, we gon' get a LOT of subs for this."
"I know, right?" He finishes packing his gear and we head off to the next few panels.
As the hours go on, Pete's beginning to act a bit wack. I mean he's cool and all but I can tell something ain't right, or at least he thinks so. Keeps looking over his shoulder as if he just stuffed several iPhones down his pants at Target. And the selfies... never knew Pete to be the selfie type…
Suddenly he taps me on the shoulder. "Hey Isiah, I gotta go for a bit, wanna put these in the back?"
"Sure man! Where you gon' be at?"
"Arcade room. You in?"
"Nah, I wanna get some quality swag, want something?"
"It's cool man."
"Meet you in 30 then?"
"Yeah! Oh and one more thing,"
Without warning he pulls me close and snaps a selfie on his phone before heading off. well that was weird… I mean, really? What's with him and selfies all the sudden?
I walk through the crowd looking for anyone else I know. Oh! The photographer snapping pics of us at the panel! Imma go talk to this brutha.
"Hey, nice camera! Did you enjoy the panel?"
"Yeah, it was really illuminating! I especially liked the part where you discussed what happened to the Toy animatronics and-"
He goes on and on about- wait hol' up. I've seen this face round these parts before.
"wait a sec… aren't you that instagram photographer OracleIntuition?"
"Yup! The one and only!"
"Ayyyyyyyyyyyyy sup!" and we greet each other like bruthas do
"Those forest pics were the BOMB on instagram! Where you take those, Yellowstone?"
"Rockies in fact, heh heh" Isaac replies with a toothy smile
"Run into any bears in the woods?"
shit… me and my big-ass mouth...
For one half of a split-fucking-second he look at me like I stepped on his Nike Air Jordans, then gives a forced giggle.
"No bears, no stairs."
"Aw man wouldn't those be nasty!"
this n!gga be tweekin, man! Alright, think man, this is your chance!
"So, uh, what's your favorite animatronic?"
"Mine? Well, normally it'd be a toss-up between Bonnie and Freddy, but now I think I'm more of a Bonnie person-"
"Oh? What happened?"
He looked away for a bit then mused, almost as if to himself,
"Do you really think Henry and William got all of them?" He looks at me, and I feel like he's putting me on the spot.
"Well… " I begin. "Those two made a lot of the guys, who knows if there's one still lying in a dumpster somewhere and we don't even know about it…"
He didn't like that, but cat's out, so time to get direct.
"Why, you think Freddy's comin' for you?"
He bites his lower lip in thought before whispering,
"Utah Museum of Architecture and Robotics… you… you saw the pics, right?
he knows
"Yeah… but don't you think..."
"That it's a load of bear shit? That he's dead and that's it?"
Now he's getting in my face, eyes pleading.
"Listen bro, I don't know what the HELL that was, but what I saw, what I felt... That ain't natural. The more I look, the worse this whole Freddy stuff appears."
I nod, not really understanding what he's getting at.
"Look, I like what you do a lot, hell I've gotten many of my friends to subscribe to Freddle Squad themselves. But if there's one thing to keep in mind, it's-"
Isaac suddenly gasps and turns green before giving me this wide-eyed stare as he stammers; "I-I-gotta go. Catch you up later?" Before I can reply he speedwalks off towards the restrooms. Looking around, I can't see what could have possibl-
NO.
FUCKIN SATAN FREDDY IS HERE???
"Agh you fucking kids, I'll get even with you for this I swear to God!"
Freddy flails around picking out the stuff sticking to his fur… oh. It's just silly string. He catches me staring. "the fuck's so funny?" then he storms off as we watch in confusion.
Well…
What exactly did he want me to keep in mind?
A guy like Isaac? If anything, now I know Isaac ain't fooling around… either he got played, or…
Well he sure as hell believes it.
Whatever…
I had two options to soothe my nerves… percs or merch. Ain't that an easy choice…

Upstairs there's this area labeled "PRIZE CORNER" through some huge double doors, Fazbear Security lookalikes checking for badges. And for good reason.
"PRIZE CORNER" my ass.
This area is perhaps THE biggest room in the entire convention center, size of at least two NBA arenas, all covered from wall to wall with booths selling all kinds of merchandise!!!! Funko Pops, McFarlane sets, posters and wall hangings of all kinds. Still don't know why such popular companies would still endorse such a controversial brand though, better for the fans anyways! Plus, half of the room was fanart and fan crafts anyways, including art (all kinds), plushies (all kinds), and a wide variety of cosmetic and cosplay merch including OC fursuits costing at least 3 grand each.
Wait…
Is that what I think I see? LIMITED EDITION SANSHEE FREDBEAR PLUSH? HALF OFF!?! GIMME!! I push through the crowd and run towards it like a person running from a killer (off topic, what a coincidence)
15 singles later I'm hauling this brand new Sanshee Fredbear plush I've always been wanting to have to finish my collection in some gift bag over my shoulder, ready to wave it at his face once I finally catch up to him… aaaand Pete's nowhere to be seen. Well… so much for that I guess. Seriously? Dude can't have just bailed on me so soon.
I push past a gaggle of girls dressed up to look like the slutty versions of the Classic Freddy and Friends™ and find Pete talking with this security guard who clearly wasn't a Fazbear fan, occasionally pointing at his cell to show the guard something. As I'm about to call out to him, he finishes the conversation and bumps right into me. He looks very tense, which doesn't help at all.
"Dude, Pete, what's yo problem? Look, let's go somewhere more private so that we don't look like we're slinging rocks or something."
We walk over to this secluded corner and I confront him. "Dangit, boi! You've been acting all sorts of strange since our panel, taking selfies like 'that thot over there' and lookin' around acting all weird and shit. What the hell?!" Pete raises his hands in a defensive posture as I lay it on him.
"Alright Isiah, calm down, I can explain!"
Let's hear the worst.
"You know during that panel, there was this hoodie boy sitting all the way in the back, listening to his iPod or something?" I rack my brains to recall, but nobody in particular stood out to me-
wait…
"Was it some skinny Unabomber lookin' fella?"
"Yes! Yes it was!" Pete replies excitedly. "I thought he was just some weirdo at the wrong panel but then he started following us. I'd see him out of the corner of my eye but he'd always vanish like some ghost or something."
oh great, a crazed stalker. This day just keeps getting better and better...
Pete pulls out his cell phone to show me. "Here, have a look," he opens up the gallery and clicks on one particular selfie. All I see is his stupid grin, but then he zooms in on a corner, revealing the sunglasses-wearing "hoodie boy" who clearly looked sketchy as all hell. No drug dealer would be that careless to just walk around in broad daylight… right? Instantly, I'm reminded to that text I got from that creep back in the airplane.
"And that's not all… Isiah, look." He opens up a set of new text messages sent just about half an hour ago.
I see you Good talk, by the way Look before you leap You might not like what you find
BZZZZZZ BZZZZZZZ
Just then, I receive a new text of my own.
NEW MESSAGE: UNKNOWN ID You can still walk away. Or don't, it's up to you.
BZZZZZZ BZZZZZZZ
NEW MESSAGE: UNKNOWN ID Remember, the Shadows have ears.
*Oh hell no. *
“Yo Pete, I just got two texts from the same guy……”
“Who, the one from the airplane?”
"Yeah."
"shit."
Someone is clearly fucking with us, shit, shit, shit
“Maybe… maybe this is some creepy mega fan?”
“THAT'S STILL BAD.” Pete cries.
“Hopefully this is just a joke and it's not that important. You know what, let's get something to eat if that makes you feel better. I heard they have a really good place that make pizzas as good as Freddy's not to far from here. We don’t have to be here again until 4:00, that means we have 5 hours to spend.”
“That seems nice.” Pete replies.
We move through the crowd to get to the entrance, guarded by security wearing faux Freddy’s security guard gear. These guards look like they have something better to do.
We go to the front of the convention center near the pickup area.
“Uber?” Pete asks
I nod in agreement. Pete goes on his phone and pays for the ride.
I should invite Dawko to come eat with us.
TO: DAWKO ME AND PETE ARE GOING TO EAT, WANNA JOIN?
I never got to send that text; when I turn around I see an out-of-breath Dawko running from a mob of fangirls.
“HIDE ME!” he pants. We see the uber driver pull up on the curve.
“Hurry, go!” I say, motioning him to get his ass in the car as we follow suit, pulling an OJ Simpson down Main street like a Ford Bronco chased by the po-lice.
“Shit, you good bro?” I ask Dawko during the ride.
“Yeah, I guess.”
I'm now grateful that I'm not as famous as him.
The ride drags along. We talk to our Uber driver and actually have a decent conversation. He looked hella sketchy, though. He looked familiar, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it.
“Behold, Bacco's!” I say as I get into to an introducing pose.
“Wineries?” Pete says confusingly
“NAME DOESN'T MATTER”
As we enter the building, the savoury scent of pizza fills my nose as I look around. When I look, there's this extremely cute girl, sitting by herself eating.
...
and she T H I C C
Yo brutha, you got this
“Yo dudes, one second.” I tell my party of two. Hopefully no one intervenes and I can talk to her.
“Ay, hold on there buddy-boy. You trying to get some of that, arencha?” Pete says.
It’s always the black man that can’t do anything.
“Yo, what the hell Pete. “
“It’s not my fault that you made it obvious.”
“Well it’s not my fault tha-”
WHY CAN’T I GET A BREAK. STOP INTERRUPTING ME!
“You know what, let's sit over there then.” Dawko says outta nowhere
Who invited this dude to the conversation?
Dawko talks to waiter for awhile and then we somehow get a table next to her.
I settle down in my seat while the others gather around me.
this is my chance!
Ok, to hook this girl I got to start off smooth and then work my way up.
"Whoa… is that a HERO6????"
Nice way to start a conversation, nerd. What’s next, let me guess, ‘You have some nice camera lenses.’ Dafuq were you thinking?
"Yup! Just came out too; well, it's not mine, really, my sister let me borrow it for this trip."
phew! Okay you can still save this
"Really now? Where you heading?"
"Centralia, just past Route 61."
Pete raises an eyebrow. "The ghost town?"
"Yeah! It's for my journalism class up in Penn State."
"Penn State? Where you from?"
"Oh, well, me and my sister lived in Maryland before I got accepted here."
"Sweet! Pete and I came up from Orlando." I clap him on the shoulder.
"Oh! What brings you all the way up north then?"
We give her a wide grin. "Fazcon 2017 baby!" showing our VIP badges.
“oh you mean the Freddy convention? I did see the ads, plus there's quite a few costumed guys running around the place." The lady shrugs. "Oh! where's my manners, I'm Charisma."
Cute name… DAMNIT ISIAH KEEP YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME!
“I'm Isiah, this is Pete. Oh yeah, you probably know him already but this is Dawko, nice to meet you.”
Dawko gives a small wave. I am about to make my move until this guy, who kinda reminds me of that one buffed up jock in a high school movie, shows up and sits right next to Charisma (she still has a cute name- ISIAH KEEP IT TOGETHER.) The guy also puts his arm around her.
Please don't tell me it's her bo-
“Oh, this is Jason, who I'm doing the project with!"
Shit, what kinda project then, chemistry? Seems a bit too close to be a “project partner”
The jock stretches his hand over to me and I shake it. “Nice to meet you.” he says.
“Nice to meet you too.” I reply.
THIS FELLOW HOMOSAPIEN IS DATING THIS EXTREMELY ATTRACTIVE FEMALE HOMOSAPIEN, IT'S SO FUCKING OBVIOUS SPILL THE BEANS ALREADY DAMNIT.
Okay, I need to chill the fuck down.
“So both of you go to Centralia?” I ask
“Yeah.” Charisma replies, her “project partner” nods in agreement.
"Say, wasn't there a Chica's Party World near that area few decades back?" Dawko pipes up.
“Oh yeah, there was. You all probably already know what happened, since you are fans and stuff."
We shot the shit for a few more while finishing up that delicious gourmet pizza, but before long, Charisma and Jason have to get going. They head out in this blue hatchback that looks like it's from the 90s and barely runs. Soon, it's Dawko's turn to leave, and we wish him the best.
Ah well, now it's just the two of us and this tasty pizza. At least there's that right?
"Um… let's just… let's just go back to the hotel, I could use a hot shower, and hey, perhaps you wanna catch up some sleep and oh maybe cuddle Mr. Fredbear?"
Two for flinching, Pete.
We cross the road and head down Strawberry street to ditch our merch back at our room. We pass by those two vantablack cosplayers again in front of the parking lot-
wait hol up
WHAT
Pete stopped dead cold, no doubt just as spooked as I was. Two lots down, there he was.
CREEPY

ASS

HOODIE BOY.

...
Fuck.
Everything 'bout this guy screams "ghetto neighborhood pusher" and part of me wonders what he got in the waistband of those jeans. Black Air Max sneakers, gray hoodie and red baseball cap leaning on a pillar facing away from us while he's smoking a cig. I see something in the garage mirror-
Double fuck.
Them vantablack n!ggas are closing in.
"That's the guy from the-"
"I know! Keep movin, we're almost there."
Plan's to make it to the elevator then swipe the keycard before we haul ass upstairs after locking him and his ninja thugs outside. Please Jesus I hope this works…

Hoodie boy's whistling now, great. Maybe he didn't see us?
Shit this is bad. I hope he's just-
… where'd he go???
"Hey homie, you got a light?"
where did-
OH GOD
HE'S FUCKING RIGHT IN FRONT OF US
FUCK
This is so fucking bad, man.
I'm about to get mugged by the Unabomber, this rail-thin dude in aviator glasses and a pedo mustache.
I feel cold, like freezer cold…
Heavy breathing…
We're boxed in by his ninja black shadow goons.
fuck, fuck, fuck. We are dead.
"Umm, sorry no, we don't smoke..."
The door is right fucking there… do we run???
“No speak english, mi amigo.” Pete says
Fucking classic Pete. A look at him, he already knows what I am thinking. LET’S NASCAR THIS BIH.
Me and Pete both run from the Vantablacks (I might just call them that now, seems like a good band name) towards the glass enclosure, hoping that we get away in time. One of them, maybe the lead-singer, extends their arms and grabs me. We on some Bendy and the Ink Machine type-shit now WHAT THE FUCK. The other I swear to Lord Almighty fuckin FLASH STEPS RIGHT IN FRONT OF PETE before grabbing him and spinning him round against the glass with a loud THUD. I grab my backpack quick and find my bible.
Momma I'm sorry for throwing this but I need to live.
“LET THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPEL YOU!” I scream as I through the very expensive bible at the lead-singer of the Vantablacks-no. Not at… through. THIS IS SOME FORREAL DEVIL SHIT. WTF. He just looks down then back before he football tackles me against the glass like Pete. There's something yellow on the gro- oh. Fredbear fell out… hoodie boy gon' rob me of my phone, my wallet, AND Mr. Fredbear. fuuck.
Hoodie boy just leans on one of the pylons and watches us squirm with this shit eating grin as if he 'bout to bust us for possession while he walks over and picks up the Good Book before dusting it off. Lazily he flicks through the pages before he talks reeal low; "If there is a God, He will have to beg for my forgiveness" then he slams the bible shut with an echoing clap.
The Vantablacks are… well I don't know what the fuck but the one holding up Pete looked like Toy Bonnie,... 'cept he's no longer a toy, more like a life-sized Annabelle, but ALLL black. It's like he's just a black space cut out from all reality except for those eyes and those… teeth. That means the other guy's… like Freddy but with one ear missing...
"You two," hoodie boy points at each of us individually, "I am impressed."
THIS IS IT. OH FUCKING HELL, AT LEAST LET ME CALL MY FAMILY AND TELL THEM I LOVE EM.
"You had some really good theories back there. Well, many of them were off, some completely wrong, but for the rest? Close for the most part."
I give a nervous laugh.
“Any suggestions?”
"Two guys, each with a fascination for Fazbear's. Pete… well… doesn't matter why. As for you, Isiah…" Black Freddy turns me around to face hoodie boy. "You wanted to understand something, something that has been nagging at the back of your mind for years." Now his green eyes are inches away from my face. "You were there, weren't you? When it happened. When he took that kid."
Pete looks at me absolutely confused. I never told anyone about that.
"Fascination… obsession… all qualities of a competent journalist, but taken too far, well… you hold onto that and it will tear you apart bit… by bit… by bit…"
"The fuck are you talking about??? What do you want?!" Pete exclaims.
"Always slick on the mouth I see." He then turns to look at me once more.
"You're treading into deep waters, friend. I've seen the end of this road and believe me, it will not be pleasant."
Stepping back, hoodie boy snaps his fingers and before I know it, Vantablack Freddy and Bonnie are back right behind him. Freddy has MY Fredbear plush and is holding it like he holdin' a baby while Bonnie just stares like a damn statue.
"You can still quit while you're ahead, guys. Let the world believe those lies and half-truths about what happened."
He then shrugs. "Or, continue down that rabbit hole… who knows? Maybe you'll be the lucky ones. Nobody ever listens to me anyway."
"then why are you-"
"I'm just here to give you a warning, Freddles. A warning and a choice. Go back to your ordinary lives as YouTube celebrities, accepting the popular opinion, or continue at your own risk. What was that, ah… live or die. Make your choice."
We look at each other for just a moment, and by the time we look back, he's gone. Just GONE. Like he pulled some Criss Angel bullshit.
Best we do the same.
Running into the elevators, we rush into our suite and double lock all the chains and latch, then start making our way to the windows. I walk toward the bed and freeze.
Mr. Fredbear is sitting dead center, staring at me shiftily with his black eyes and stupid purple clothes.
Right on top of momma's ol' family bible.
So much for sleeping tonight…
